Network Management Optimization Rules

Notice to ISP

We have recently become aware that MTN started implementing network management optimization rules a few weeks ago, which impact most customers' speeds in the evenings from 6 pm to 11 pm. It is important to note that these rules would be over and above FUP rules, which apply to any customer on an Uncapped package.

MTN has only provided the following information thus far:

  • MTN has 6 usage tiers starting from 50GB.
  • They are using a 30-day rolling window process (ie. each day, they look at usage 30 days back to determine a customer's usage tier).
  • They slow customers down to a minimum of 6Mbps to 8Mbps between 6 pm to 11 pm, depending on the usage tier.
  • Customers using a 5G device are not impacted by these rules.

Why is MTN doing this?

  • As per MTN, it is due to a rapid surge in 4G traffic in the evenings, which compromises their network.

How can you identify if a customer is impacted by the network optimization?

  • We unfortunately do not have visibility on who is impacted at this stage; however, customers will likely complain about slower than usual speeds from 6pm to 11pm in the evenings.
  • Should a customer on an uncapped package have not reached FUP limits, but is experiencing slower speeds in the evenings, then the customer is highly likely subjected to network optimization by MTN.
